The Nebraska Cattlemen Board of Directors has adopted interim policy opposing Initiative 423, the proposed constitutional amendment to be voted on Nov. 7 in the state's general election that would place a lid on the state's budget.

The Nebraska Cattlemen has long-standing policy urging tax entities to reduce their budgets and the group is opposing 423 because of its potential to indirectly increase property taxes. In addition, the Cattlemen believe the initiative could cause rural government budgets to experience additional financial burdens due to lack of prioritization of state funds.

The requirement in the Nebraska Constitution that the annual state budget be balanced is an important limitation on government spending that already exists, the Cattlemen said.

The Nebraska Cattlemen association serves as the spokesman for the state's beef cattle industry and represents professional cattle breeders, ranchers and feeders, as well as 46 county and local cattlemen's associations. Its headquarters are in Lincoln and second office in Alliance serves cattlemen in western Nebraska.
